As part of an ongoing regional search of the eastern Eyre Peninsula for possible economic stratiform base and precious metal deposits, soil sampling and SP and IP surveys were carried out over previously identified, separate linear lead and zinc geochemical anomalies in the Yeldulknie area. As well, in the hills lying a little to the east and north, another 404 of 570 now completed auger holes, average depth 5 m, were drilled to test the Cleve magnetic trend for base metals along a 20 km strike length. The auger drilling failed to locate any further geochemical anomalies. 7 diamond drillholes, total 1319.15 m, were drilled to test for base metal mineralisation at depth on the Yeldulknie anomalies and also around the Elson historic mine. No additional mineralisation was located by one drillhole (EL1) cored at 50 degrees inclination to 100.1 m total depth at the latter site, where soil anomalism peaking at 8000 ppm Zn had been recorded, but significant (to 5% by rock volume), although sub-economic silver-lead-zinc sulphide mineralisation was discovered underlying the Yeldulknie zinc anomaly by all 5 holes (ZN1 to ZN5) put down there. [At the adjoining Yeldulknie lead anomaly, the unsuccessful hole PB1 was placed to intersect the strongest IP anomaly.] Subsequent soil sampling carried out to the west of Yeldulknie, and at the Poonana and Miltalie historic mine sites, failed to reveal additional geochemical anomalies. An occurrence of an unusual powdery, bright yellow fine-grained mineral was noted in microfractured quartz veined drill core recovered from hole ZN3, and was confirmed by mineralogical analysis as being the rare cadmium sulphide mineral greenockite.
