Two historic copper mining prospects located in the Mount Coffin area, east of Copley, have been studied by a consultant geologist to determine their economic potential, following the recent conduct of separate appraisal drilling programmes by the South Australian Department of Mines and by Southern Cross Exploration as operator for SML 366 lessee Boolooroo Mining Co., which holds an option over the subject Mineral Claims that lie inside its lease. The consultant has concluded that both prospects, on the basis of the available geological data, appear to contain only steeply dipping secondary copper mineralisation held within narrow bedding-parallel veins and discordant joint planes, which mineralisation may thin out at depth. It occurs dispersed haphazardly in weathered siltstone country rocks that lie adjacent to the southern and eastern boundaries of the Mount Coffin Diapir, and extends outwards to about 150 feet distance from that diapir margin. It has been recommended that deeper percussion drilling than that completed hitherto should be attempted at locations closer to the diapir margin, to test whether any economic primary sulphide mineralisation exists near the supergene orebodies at the Elsie Adair and South Adair workings, similar to that found by drilling to around 400 feet depth a little distance to the west within SML 366. It is suggested that other, shallower percussion drilling should also be done on a grid pattern to check and determine the remaining supergene ore reserves. Finally, leaching and other metallurgical studies of the carbonate and oxide ores should be undertaken to establish likely copper metal recoveries and to guide any future mining operation that may be attempted upon the prospects. To this latter end, a small-scale pilot leaching plant capable of processing 100 tons/day is being set up, and metal extraction trials have already begun.
