The source of anomalous lead and zinc in the Radford Creek area was traced to a ferruginous outcrop of Parachilna Formation limestone that is associated with a prominent shear and also lies near the contact with the Wilkawillina Limestone. Samples of the outcrop were examined mineralogically to determine their possible gossanous affinities. Smithsonite and coronadite were identified microscopically within a sample assaying 3% combined Pb+Zn. However, no textural characteristics of an in situ gossan were discernible, and consequently it is thought that the minute smithsonite coatings within quartz-calcite-limonite wad veins may have formed by manganese oxide scavenging from zinc-rich groundwater passing through the limestone. A search was made in the vicinity of the Kanyaka mine for possible carbonatite or kimberlite indicator minerals, because of the anomalous lanthanum and scandium values previously reported by Kennecott Explorations from that company's sampling of mine spoil heaps. No such indicator minerals were found, and re-sampling of the spoil heaps could not duplicate the rare earth anomalies. An outcrop of formerly unrecorded diapiric breccia was located in the bed of Kanyaka Creek, ~2 miles east of the Kanyaka mine.
