A total of 3074 square km or ~86.25% of the originally granted area of EL 266 which borders the north-western side of Spencer Gulf has recently been relinquished by BHP after one year of work, due to its now perceived diminished prospectivity for stratabound iron ore or other base metals mineralisation. Following the acquisition and interpretation of regional aeromagnetic and radiometric data, with ground magnetic traverse confirmation of selected targets, 10 rotary/percussion drillholes totalling 698 m tested various large aeromagnetic anomalies located near Moonabie, Nonowie, Kooralla, Arno Bay and Port Neill, as part of a regional search by BHP for high grade iron ore deposits or for easily beneficiated low grade iron deposits. The source of the Moonabie anomaly was attributed to magnetite amphibolites, and that at Nonowie to magnetite quartzites and magnetite amphibolites. The Kooralla anomaly's magnetic source was indeterminate due to the rig having drilling difficulties, while the Arno Bay anomaly appeared to be due to magnetite-bearing pyroxene granulites, and the Port Neill anomaly to magnetite-rich gneisses.
