As part of a regional programme evaluating the potential of the Eyre Peninsula for economic stratabound base metal deposits, an area of relatively good outcrop lying north-west and west of Cowell was explored by 1:20,000 scale geological mapping, rock chip sampling for geochemical and petrological studies, and close examination of abandoned past workings to try to determine ore host rocks and controls. The style of mineralisation seen, within a strongly metamorphosed sequence of fine-grained clastic and chemical sediments, suggests a local secondary derivation which may be controlled by older basement structural features. No significant new mineralisation was found: the previously mined occurrences, although often quite high grade, tend to be pod-like with no appreciable strike extent. Gridding and detailed 1:2500 scale mapping were carried out over a known uranium geochemical anomaly in the historic Calcookra copper mine environs. Costeaning and detailed scintillometer traversing in the area failed to reveal further uranium mineralisation.
