Investigation of banded iron formation in the Lincoln Uplands of the Green Patch district for possible South West African type base metal sulphide deposits, consisted of rock chip and stored drill core sampling for trace metal and whole rock silicate analysis, which revealed the extent of lateritization and deep oxidation through leaching at potential gossanous outcrops. No anomalous base metal assays were returned. A detailed comparison was made between the chemistries of weathered and fresh iron formation, in order to ascertain the effects of the weathering on original metal content. It was concluded that the weathering processes had favoured the precipitation of iron oxides and the dissolution and eventual partial dissipation of manganese oxides, but also that there had been no significant leaching of base metals.
