A consultant's technical review was received on existing recent exploration data originating from the SA Mines Department, for the Mount Coffin Diapir and its immediate environment. It was found that significant geochemical and induced polarisation anomalies remain untested, and that evidence of primary sulphide ore underlying the historical workings in the oxidised zone at several prospects had not since been adequately investigated by drilling or by detailed IP surveys. The recommended work was carried out in 1970-71 by licence farminee Southern Cross Exploration, including drilling of 92 grid-based percussion holes for 22,942 feet, plus another 5 diamond holes for 1537 feet, but unfortunately, diamond drilling difficulties in broken ground to the south of the diapir precluded any of five holes from reaching the deep target sulphide zone, while further IP surveying there showed that the observed abnormally high IP response was due to carbonaceous shales in the Tindelpina unit, which exist above any such mineralised zone in country rock near the diapir contact.
