During a one-month free appraisal period granted over certain current mining claims situated approximately 1.5 miles south-east of Copley, Horizon Explorations for its option take-up evaluation conducted prospect geological mapping at 1:2400 scale, grid-based soil sampling (815 samples taken at 200 foot centres) and limited percussion drilling (11 holes for 1535 feet) to investigate the economic potential of irregular disseminated secondary copper mineralisation, present mainly along joints and fractures within weathered and structurally complex Adelaidean metasediments, besides following up indications of some stratabound bedded primary sulphides. Nine surface geochemical anomalies were found, but these were discounted as originating from minor mineralised sources seen during mapping. The drilling disclosed a small amount of pyrite-chalcocite mineralisation in the zone below the local water table, which Horizon concluded represents in-situ supergene sulphide enrichment of probable low-grade, pyrite dominant proto-ore. This mineralisation appears to follow the bedding both along strike and down dip, for 375 feet and 150 feet respectively, but the company decided that an underlying economic primary copper deposit is unlikely to exist, and therefore surrendered its option to buy the leases. On 9/3/1972 Bridge Minerals entered a separate new option agreement with the private holders of the subject copper mining leases to carry out further exploration work. This comprised 1:1200 scale geological mapping, soil sampling, costean and underground shaft/drive rock chip sampling, and a review of historical drilling results. Further work was recommended, in the form of IP traverses to be run over the contact of the Copley Diapir with favourable country rocks, plus the drilling of several deep holes to probe beneath the old workings for sulphide mineralisation at depth, and to delineate the tonnage and grade of indicated workable remaining reserves of oxy-carbonate ore in secondary, near-surface lodes on four parts of the leases. [A plan showing the locations of numerous drillholes that were subsequently completed by Bridge Minerals is included with this Envelope).
