In a search for possible economic stratiform base metals within Adelaidean sediments on the western edge of the Stuart Shelf, one vertical diamond cored hole was drilled to 154.44 m near a pair of basement outliers of Gawler Range Volcanics, to test for the inferred existence of Adelaidean strata in the subsurface and to also investigate the Mesoproterozoic basal Pandurra Formation for base metals. No significant mineralisation was found. Drill core sample assay results, whilst of low tenor throughout the core, indicate that slightly higher base metal values are present in the underlying Gawler Range Volcanics than in the wholly Pandurra Formation cover sequence. The possibility of an unknown buried synclinal sequence of Adelaidean sediments at Mahanewo was disproved.
