A strong radiometric anomaly, previously found in pre-Adelaidean basement schist near its contact with Adelaidean Woolshed Flat Shale metasediments at the Pine Ridge prospect, and situated within the Mount Crawford State Forest approximately 7 km north-northeast of Forreston, was investigated by Uranerz for possible vein-style pegmatitic uranium, after the cancellation of a Mineral Claim which had formerly covered the prospect area. In addition, the wider area of exposed Barossa Complex basement rocks in the surrounding district was taken up to permit further exploration for like uranium occurrences, should the Pine Ridge anomaly prove to represent an economic accumulation of primary uraniferous ore. Initial activities comprised regional geological mapping of the licence area, plus very detailed 1:2500 scale mapping of the 1.2 km x 2.0 km Pine Ridge prospect locality. A survey grid was then laid out at the prospect, and close-spaced ground traverses of magnetic, radiometric and IP recordings were read. This work revealed that strong (up to 1500 counts per second) total count radiation, interpreted to be sourced by uranium, emanates from a very thin quartz-haematite-goethite horizon present within an arenaceous schist, which outcrops near a quartz-albite-sericite pegmatite. The magnetic data was able to define the contact between the Adelaidean cover and the schistose basement, and the IP profiling outlined a potentially metalliferous conductor at a moderate depth beneath the site of the peak of the radiometric anomaly. In September 1978 Uranerz commissioned the digging of a 2 m deep backhoe trench across 18 m (later extended to 23 m) of the Pine Ridge prospect objective zone. To start with, 24 chip samples were taken in the costean for assay, and returned a maximum uranium content of 177 ppm, from schistose rocks near their western-side contact with a pegmatite mass. Afterwards, another 21 rock chip samples plus 6 grab samples were taken from the eastern-side contact of the schists with a second pegmatite. The chip assaying here gave a maximum of 26 ppm U, while the grab samples returned best values of 71 ppm U, 76 ppm Y, and only negligible Th. In view of the disappointing assay results obtained from their sampling of the prospect's supergene level, Uranerz considered that the risk entailed by proceeding to drill was not warranted, and so the licence was allowed to lapse.
