The potential for finding remnant economic stratiform gold mineralisation in the Mannahill Gold Field was investigated by examining the old surface and underground mine workings, and the best-developed ore shoots were tested by drilling 25 vertical percussion holes totalling 717 m. Prior rock chip sampling and 1:5,000 scale geological mapping were also undertaken. The limited apparent lode thickness, lack of lode continuity and marginally economic gold grades found by the appraisal drilling (maximum intercept 8.13 g/tonne Au over 0.5 m in hole M6) were deemed insufficient to warrant underground or open cut ore extraction.
