As part of an ongoing search for MVT style base metal mineralisation within Lower Cambrian strata of the southern part of the Torrens Hinge Zone on Yorke Peninsula, in September 1975 112 RC holes for 1730 m were drilled at 500 m spacings along roadsides near Curramulka, along nine traverses spaced from 3 to 11 km apart, in a preliminary reconnaissance of cover stratigraphy and bedrock geochemistry. High background levels of lead and zinc were revealed in the Cambrian carbonate rocks from assaying of bottomhole drill cuttings samples. Data records from old drillholes were studied. Wireline geophysical logging was able to be carried out in 27 old water bores. A computer-assisted basement depth and structural interpretation was performed on the aeromagnetic data from the 1974 survey, which helped to define the thickness of Cambrian strata, the position and nature of several major faults (i.e. thrust vs normal), and which identified an intra-basement marker horizon correlated with the Willamulka Volcanics unit. To test the applicability of the method, 10 line km of dipole-dipole IP profiles were read across selected surface geochemical anomalies. Two coherent IP anomalies were detected close to Curramulka township, one located beneath the golf course. During May 1976, further regional bedrock geochemical sampling was performed to the north of Curramulka via rotary drag bit drilling of 166 vertical open holes for 2382 m, and the results were combined with those obtained in 1975. Seven lead anomalies were disclosed above a threshold value of 240 ppm; five zinc anomalies of >250 ppm; and six copper anomalies of >210 ppm. During July 1976, 5 vertical rotary percussion holes totalling 550 m were drilled to examine the Kulpara Limestone - Parara Limestone contact. The drill cuttings were sampled at 2-metre intervals for laboratory assaying and to provide material for petrographic studies of the environments of deposition of carbonate rocks. Each hole was geophysically logged with gamma ray, neutron, point resistivity and SP tools. Base metal assay values of up to 0.65% Pb and 0.48% Zn were returned.
