Investigation of banded iron formation in the Lincoln Uplands of the Tumby Bay district for possible South West African type base metal sulphide deposits consisted of rock chip and soil sampling at potential gossanous outcrops, and limited drilling of certain geochemical anomalies. Rotary percussion drilling of zinc and manganese - rich chloritic schists at Bosom Gully (3 holes, total 320.5 m) plus shallow RAB drilling of laterally equivalent Zn, Mn and Ba anomalous gossans over dolomites bordering BIF in the Waterfall Gully area (4 holes, total 94 m) failed to encounter economic mineralisation. The deep chemical weathering and lateritisation of BIF host Hutchison Group schists and gneisses rendered many of the geochemical results highly ambiguous, so a programme of regolith sampling was undertaken at Koppio to determine the geochemical effects of the thick weathering that has occurred there over BIF and amphibolitic bedrock. This work included the relogging and re-analysis by AAS and XRF of previous diamond drill cores from holes KD3 and KD4.
