In response to considerable public concern about the environmental aspects of tailings dams associated with the rapidly increasing volume of treatment of natural sands and crushed stone sands at quarries in the Adelaide outer metropolitan area, a programme of investigation was set up to explore alternative production methods for sand products, and to examine alternative uses for fine tailings.
