To determine whether the subject licence could contain geophysical or geochemical anomalies that might reflect Olympic Dam type copper-uranium mineralisation potential within the Precambrian basement rocks, consultant Ian Youles designed a programme comprising a gravity survey and drilling, to define and investigate the peak of the broad regional gravity high recognised within the EL. Following a literature study of the characteristics of Stuart Shelf and Olympic Dam economic geology, a 25 square km prospect area was investigated, on a 400 m x 800 m grid, with track etch, gravity, ground magnetic and ground radiometric surveys. The resultant gravity data had a total range of about 2 mGal, and revealed a central low but no highs. The magnetic data indicated a high in the north-western corner of the grid, but this does not coincide with any other geophysical feature. Radiometric and track etch data revealed no significant radiation variations. The potential for discovering Olympic Dam style mineralisation is therefore now considered as low. Limited scout drilling for sedimentary uranium in basal Tertiary sediments may be warranted, but achieving drilling rig access through the prevalent dunes would be expensive.
