Airborne and ground geophysical surveys were undertaken in the Billa Kalina area, prior to commencing to drill in a search for Olympic Dam type Cu-U-Au mineralised haematitic breccias, in order to delineate and detail several broad magnetic anomalies thought to originate in well-buried Proterozoic basement intrusives or in the overlying basal Adelaidean sediments. A secondary target comprised possible sedimentary uranium within suitable subsurface redox facies of younger Permian, Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments. 3 deep vertical diamond cored holes (total 1738.6 m) were drilled late in 1978 by Kennecott over selected discrete gravity or coincident magnetic/gravity anomalies, but all three were terminated within barren Pandurra Formation before reaching basement, and did not identify the sources of the anomalies. Previously, geological mapping plus water bore and ground radioactivity surveys that were carried out by Samedan further elucidated the stratigraphic succession and sediment depositional history of the area, but failed to disclose any significant near-surface uranium.
