Exploration for possible Precambrian hydrothermal vein-style or unconformity type uranium deposits, and for any other economic metalliferous minerals, was carried out over several small inliers of Palaeoproterozoic rocks that crop out poorly through Cainozoic lateritic soils and Permian glacial cover in an area located 12 km east of Willunga. Semi-detailed, 1:13,500 scale geological mapping outlined an antiformal structure of Barossa Complex rocks which is faulted into three blocks overlain unconformably by Adelaidean and Cambrian strata, with the metamorphic grade of the former varying from upper amphibolite to lower greenschist facies. A ground scintillometer survey was carried out which identified four low-order radiometric anomalies (highest 6 x bkgd). Background radiation readings averaging 130 counts per second were obtained over the Palaeoproterozoic rocks, while 80 cps came from over most other rocks. Nine grab samples taken from radiometrically anomalous sites that were sent for chemical analysis showed a distinct thorium bias, having U/Th ratios of between 1:4 and 1:40. Petrographic studies made on 27 basement rock samples indicated that a quartz +/- feldspar +/- biotite gneiss is the dominant lithotype. Accessory monazite, zircon and possible brannerite appeared to be the minerals giving rise to the observed radioactivity.
