An exploration licence area covering the projected northerly trending, buried portion of the Precambrian Benagerie Ridge basement was taken up by CRA to explore principally for possible secondary sandstone-hosted uranium mineralisation in Tertiary and Mesozoic sediments, and for possible primary uranium/copper mineralisation associated with Precambrian volcanic rocks. Following the conduct of a preliminary field reconnaissance and a literature review of available stratigraphic information from past drilling, a 600 line km low level airborne magnetic/radiometric survey was flown over an elongate, 200 gammas intensity regional magnetic anomaly present in the northern part of the EL. Here a thick cover of possible Middle Cambrian redbeds and carbonate rocks was anticipated, underlying a relatively thin cover of Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments. Computer modelling and interpretation of the aeromagnetic data, using a two-dimensional ridge model, suggested that magnetic basement depths are 1800-2000 m at the southern end of the anomaly, increasing to 3000 m at the northern end. The literature search and inspection of stored drill cores had indicated that Palaeozoic and Adelaidean rocks are absent (through uplift and erosion) from the top of the Benagerie Ridge in the south of EL 437. No anomalous counts were observed in any of the four radiometric spectral channels recorded during the airborne survey. A semi-detailed gravity survey was then carried out over a section of the target elongate magnetic anomaly, on a 1 km x 1 km grid covering an area of 9 km x 19 km on the southern part of the basement ridge near Lake Elder. The object was to define any gravity anomalies of a size comparable with that observed over the Roxby Downs [Olympic Dam] deposit, i.e. anomalies of wavelength 4-8 km and amplitudes of the order of 5 mGal. No comparable anomaly was found, and only very few lesser anomalies were seen, with the most significant being about 1 mGal. In response to receiving this discouragement, CRA decided to cease any further exploration on the tenement.
