In August 1972 Cultus Pacific commenced exploring a number of historic copper prospects near Lyndhurst in the northern Flinders Ranges, with a view to assessing their feasibility for open-cut mining. The programme of work completed so far has included geological mapping, soil surveys and several drilling campaigns (54 holes, total 7629 feet). At the site of most activity a progressive total of 2.76 million tonnes of drill-proven and probable reserves of oxidised copper ore with an average grade of 1.04% Cu has been established, together with possible reserves of similar type and grade mineralisation amounting to 1.32 million tonnes. The combined reserves lie upon two adjoining prospects in EL 12 known as the Lorna Doone and Lynda occurrences. In addition, the drilling at Lorna Doone has outlined the presence of a previously unrecognised secondary copper sulphide zone in a number of holes. Preliminary investigations have been made to assess metallurgical characteristics of the oxidised ore, and initial mining and engineering studies have also been undertaken. Lately, drilling elsewhere in the licence has delineated other potentially mineable but less rich oxidised copper lodes at Fielder's Claim (1 million tonnes averaging 0.3% Cu) and at the adjoining South Breccia Zone prospect (1.4 million tonnes averaging 0.25% Cu). Importantly, the geological information revealed by the drilling to date indicates that the licence area is also prospective for gold, zinc and uranium occurrences.
