As part of a wider search over SA for possible continental salt lake occurrences of NaCO3-rich brines and of fossil crystalline trona beds, presumed to be equivalent to the Lake Magadi (Kenya) / Green River Basin (Utah - Wyoming) style Tertiary deposits, 9 reverse circulation drillholes totalling 576 m were put down into Miocene playa lake sediments in the eastern Lake Frome area. The strata and groundwater lenses intersected were sampled and analysed for a range of diagnostic trace elements, and attempts were made to geophysically log the badly caving open drillholes. All of the holes failed to encounter saline clastic sediments of a suitable volcanogenic origin to provide the alkaline geochemical environment for hosting the target evaporite minerals.
