Dampier Mining's main objective in taking out this licence was to test a large magnetic complex, situated east of the Peake and Denison Ranges and west of Lake Eyre, for possible economic buried base and precious metal deposits. Grid-based ground magnetic and gravity surveys were acquired to further define the interpreted major aeromagnetic features, and these provided two apparently coincident gravity and magnetic anomalies, which were rotary mud precollared through the artesian aquifer sedimentary sequence, and then diamond PQ/NQ core drilled into Precambrian basement by 2 holes totalling 504.9 m. The core containing steeply dipping metamorphic basement (interpreted as Peake Metamorphics) was sampled for geochemical and petrographic determinations, and the described epidote-amphibolitic and quartzofeldspathic gneisses were found to be un-mineralised.

A high volume influx of artesian groundwater caused the abandonment of the first drillhole, WLE1, before the basement was reached.
