Exploration for possible Archaean submarine fissure volcanogenic copper-nickel deposits, and for Silverton (Colorado) vein - type late stage hydrothermal base metal-silver-gold mineralisation associated with collapsed Gawler Range caldera structures, was undertaken in the vicinity of Kokatha Station. Field geological reconnaisance looking for the interpreted caldera marginal fault zone failed to find evidence of either a resurgent volcanic dome and associated marginal fault, nor of any better prospective but narrow radial structures, in rocks that also lack indications of propylitic alteration denoting past hydrothermal activity. The regional extent of the Archaean basement volcanics could not be determined from magnetic survey interpretation owing to their low magnetic susceptibility. Therefore, due to lack of support for the exploration models, the area was surrendered.
