EL 417 Wirrabara was secured by CRA to investigate previously untested aeromagnetic, induced polarisation and resistivity anomalies in the Wirrabara - Charlton area, and a reported kimberlite at Bangor. Work has consisted of: - 3 line km of IP surveying on the Charlton grid; - 4.5 line km of ground magnetic surveying on the Charlton grid and on a nearby new grid; - drilling of 4 percussion holes (aggregating 148 m) at Charlton to test an IP anomaly; all were abandoned above the target depth of 100 m; - 1 diamond hole to 150 m depth at Charlton; the best-mineralised intersection was 640 ppm Cu, 75 ppm Pb and 40 ppm Zn over the depth interval 73.5-74.5 m. The mineralisation occurs as very poorly developed pyrite-chalcopyrite veinlets in fractures within the Appila Tillite, that were intersected between 42 and 114 m depth; - drilling 1 percussion hole to 100 m depth to test a dipolar magnetic anomaly for possible concealed kimberlite; instead, this hole encountered a magnetic dolerite, plus traces of disseminated sulphides in the overlying metasediments (with assays reaching 330 ppm Cu, 50 ppm Ni, 30 ppm W from the depth interval 16-18 m at the base of ?transported regolith); - collecting loam and stream gravel samples to test for kimberlitic indicators; none were found. It was concluded that the IP anomaly at Charlton was due to buried pyrite and graphite stringers within the Adelaidean metasedimentary bedrock, and that the local aeromagnetic bulls-eye anomalies are caused by magnetic dolerite bodies.
