Possible lignite beds within the Eocene upper Renmark Group were targeted by coal exploration carried out in an area extending from 20 km south to 80 km north of Overland Corner. Available lithostratigraphic log data from more than 500 water bores previously drilled in this region were examined, but no significant lignite or carbonaceous sediment intersections were noted. Open file aeromagnetic, gravity and seismic data were interpreted to estimate basement depth and the thickness of the pre-Tertiary sediments. Isopach maps and a 1:250k scale top-of-basement contour map were prepared. It appeared from widely spaced past drillhole intercepts that the coal target zone lies at depths between 160 and 178 m below surface, which CRAE deemed to be too deep for economic mining of any lignite deposits that might be found.
