Basal Neoproterozoic Tapley Hill Formation - hosted stratiform copper was targeted primarily in this exploration programme, which consisted of reconnaissance deep percussion drilling (17 holes for a total advance of 4167 m) on the centres of aeromagnetic highs after they had been further delineated by ground magnetometry. One of the percussion holes (PIL3) was deepened with a 140.4 m diamond tail (DDH SAI-1) to investigate the potential for Olympic Dam - type mineralisation in the pre-Pandurra basement. All drillholes were radiometrically logged for stratigraphic correlation purposes. Base metal potential in the upper Tapley Hill sequence is considered high, with elevated background zinc levels, although only minor Pb-Zn mineralisation was intersected. No Tapley Hill Formation is present on the western side of Lake Macfarlane. The stratigraphy, sedimentary geology and distribution of the Pandurra Formation was further unravelled, and also its contact relationships to older Gairdner Dolerite dykes and the Gawler Range Volcanics, which were penetrated by a few of the drillholes. The drilling carried out in the south-western part of EL 301 has disclosed a buried sequence of Pandurra Formation sedimentary rocks that are generally greater than 300 m in thickness, and which shallow to the west. The sequence is lithologically remarkably similar going from hole to hole, and the formation can be subdivided into several distinct members of regional extent. No significant mineralisation was seen either within the Pandurra interval or at its basal unconformable contact with the Gawler Range Volcanics. There are no favourable lithotypes present in the basal Pandurra in the area so far drilled, which might host Zambian Copperbelt - type base metal deposits. Also, no prominent magnetic or gravity anomalies exist in this south-western area which might indicate Olympic Dam style mineralised basement bodies. Accordingly, the south-western portion of the licence area will be relinquished when tenure is renewed in early 1979.
