The target was possible diamonds, with base metals and coal as secondary interests. Initially, a 1:25,000 scale colour aerial photographic survey was flown across part of the now relinquished licence area, to assist BHP in mapping geomorphic and surface geology structural features. An airborne magnetic/radiometric survey flown for BHP in August 1979 identified numerous anomalies which were interpreted as possibly due to buried kimberlites. Ground magnetic survey follow-up defined targets which were tested during the period January to April 1980 by vertical rotary percussion drilling; in total, 93 open holes for 2158.6 m were completed at 28 anomalies, with bottom hole cores being cut in 14 holes. 36 holes were terminated within mafic rocks that have intruded the Neoproterozoic metasedimentary country rocks. Bottom of hole samples, and occasional up-hole samples, were assayed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, Ni, Nb. No kimberlite was found, nor were any significant bedrock geochemical results recorded, and consequented the subject portion of the licence area, comprising 61% of the originally granted acreage, was relinquished.
