A geological consultancy's initial assessment of the previously worked basal Cambrian rock phosphate occurrence near Myponga has indicated that promising mineral-rich horizons may exist over considerable widths (to at least 300 feet) on the north-western side of a gully where the previous open cut mine and prospecting costeans are located. Grab sample analyses returned quite high values of around 28% P2O5, peaking at 34.1% P2O5 in remnant ore taken from the walls of the old BHP open cut. Although potential mineralised lenses may extend along strike for in excess of 2000 feet at this occurrence, the structural complexity locally present in the bedding, and the apparently limited phosphatic rock outcrop, render difficult any quick determination of the mineral potential of the site. Uncertainty over the mineralisation's persistence at depth has led to recommendations for further trenching to help to define the stratigraphic ore controls, and for the drilling of a single 300 foot deep test diamond hole to resolve the latter critical question.
