As part of an ongoing multi-licence programme of exploration for Roxby Downs / Olympic Dam style copper-gold-uranium [IOCG-U] mineralisation that might exist along the eastern margin of the Stuart Shelf, the licensees took up the Strangways Springs area in mid-May 1979. Initial work comprised making a review of available drillhole information and preparing to conduct surface-based geophysical and geochemical surveys. But subsequently, when the JV partners conducted some deep stratigraphic drilling and seismic reflection surveying a short distance to the south-west on their adjoining Mount Morgan EL 335, this work indicated that, there in general, >1500-2000 m thickness of Adelaidean metasediments could overlie the prospective Middle to Lower Proterozoic crystalline basement rocks. Accordingly it was concluded that possibly an even greater thickness of such cover might be expected to be present on the subject EL 475, where no clear geophysical evidence of the presence of upfaulted basement blocks could be seen, because this area lay further to the east or Adelaide Geosyncline depositional side of the location drilled by DDH SR 17/2. Thus it was now considered that the economic viability of locating any Olympic Dam type target mineralisation in this area had become much downgraded. In terms of new field work undertaken by the JV, the groundwater outflow from certain artesian mound springs which lie within the EL 475 area was geochemically sampled for dissolved pathfinder elements which might point to the proximity of target mineralisation, but no significant assay values were obtained.
