A mining consultant was engaged by mineral claim option holder Murumba Minerals to assess the commercial potential of a rare (for Australia) grouping of lens style nephrite deposits located about 20 km north of Cowell, which had only been mined on a small scale and explored superficially by their private prospector discoverers since 1967. The field work undertaken consisted of further prospecting and 1:8400 regional scale geological mapping of the area, the drilling of 6 shallow diamond core holes totalling 470 feet into the apparently best quality nephrite lenses, to test their depth extent and jade mineral quality, plus more detailed 1:600 scale mapping of these occurrences. The five drillholes put down on Swain's lease (ML 3426) failed to encounter nephrite, but the single hole drilled on Schiller's worked deposit intersected 1 foot of black nephrite at about 50 feet depth. From this it was concluded that the nephrite distribution in the shallow subsurface was likely to be very poddy and somewhat unpredictable in its occurrence. It was also learned that at depth the nephrite quality would improve, due to a lack of the flaws which decrease the value of the outcropping material. The geological mapping done on Schiller's four leases revealed that they cover two high quality, potentially profitably mineable nephrite deposits, which were next topographically surveyed to allow for the preparation of production tonnage and open cut mining cost estimates. It was proposed that a mining operation be set up for intermittent contract extraction of black jade material, to be processed onsite within a small slabbing and polishing factory. The latter requirement is seen as necessary because the current world average price of slabbed nephrite rough (between $1 and $2 per lb) is almost entirely dependent upon rate of sales. It was strongly advised to the client that early ownership control be gained to all of the probable commercial deposits of nephrite in the Cowell area.
