Vertical percussion drilling (4 holes totalling 577 m) and diamond drilling (3 holes totalling 538.4 m) undertaken in the Tregalana and Sugarloaf Hill areas of the Stuart Shelf disclosed weak base metal mineralisation (0.05-0.65% Cu spread unevenly over up to a 3 m thick interval, predominantly as chalcopyrite) in black shales, dolomitic siltstones and volcanic conglomerate at the base of the Tapley Hill Formation. The use of radiometric borehole logging to identify such thin lithological units, for purposes of correlation between widely spaced holes, proved most successful in the Tregalana area. An Honours student project was supervised which sampled volcanic rocks in drill core from diamond hole SAS1 in the northern, Tent Hill licence block, to describe and characterise the spilitic lava flows intersected there overlying the Pandurra Formation: rock textural, silicate geochemical and Rb/Sr dating geochronological evidence was presented that defines a new stratigraphic unit, the Beda Volcanics, which is well differentiated from the lithologically similar Roopena and Depot Creek alkaline basaltic volcanic rocks of the region.
