Exploration for possible economic trona deposits thought to have formed within Cainozoic near-surface sediments, in an area of thick lacustrine sedimentation located 80 km north of Marree, consisted only of a consultant's review of available hydrogeological data and the sampling of 4 water bores for present-day ground water hydrochemistry. It was concluded that there were too many uncertainties concerning palaeoenvironmental conditions that affected the loci of groundwater discharge/evaporation, including the dynamic nature of the actual water chemistry, to allow for effective exploration targeting.
