TARGET: Sedimentary uranium in Tertiary paleochannels draining the western margin of the Gawler Craton, and in sediments of the Wilkinson Trough. Base metals in Proterozoic basement rocks. EXPLORATION: Rotary drilling (48 holes totalling 3213 m), with analysis of basement core samples; photointerpretation, plus alphameter and vehicle mounted spectrometer surveys near drill holes showing anomalous gamma radiation, and over radiometric anomalies indicated by a previous aerial survey. Mapping and sampling of the exposed Mulgathing Complex for base metal - orientated petrographic and trace element studies was also undertaken. RESULTS: Anomalous radioactivity (greater than 4 times background) was detected in a number of widely spaced drillholes, generally at the contact between lignitic Eocene Pidinga Formation and the overlying sandy to clayey Garford Formation. WL 22, WL 38 and seven other of the drill holes intersected significant radiometric anomalies (e.g. gamma log values up to 0.33 pounds equivalent U3O8 from 29 m depth in WL38), but follow-up work downgraded the area's potential.
