A request was recieved from the Highways and Local Government Department (D.M. 864/50) for a geological survey and estimation of reserves of road metal from Sections 229 and 128 in the Hundred of Nuriootpa. The volume of stone required was 500,000 cubic yards. Section 229 has an estimated reserve of 450,000 cubic yards (vide report by I.R. Campbell, D.M. 337/54) of suitable stone. There is an estimated 150,000 cubic yards (in situ) of high quality stone in Section 128 and this figure could be largely included in the estimate. Mr. E. Leske of Daveyston is the owner of Section 128 and as the Mineral Rights are alienated from the Crown, royalties will be payable to him. In the past, the deposit was worked by White Rock Quarries Ltd., but in a recent telephone conversation with this firm the author was informed that the lease has been taken over by the Freeling Council. This has not been confirmed.
