The Highways and Local Government Department indicates that this area around Greenock and Daveyston is in a strategic position to supply material for future road construction and maintenance and that large volume of road metal (500,000 cubic yards) could be required eventually. Two sections are mentioned as localities for obtaining the stone. This report deals with the quantity and quality of stone in Section 229, Hundred of Nuriootpa, and D.Thatcher, Assistant Geologist, reports on investigation carried out on Section 128, Hundred of Nuriootpa (vide D.M. 338/54). An existing quarry, known as Zilm's, is situated in the south-west corner of Section 229. Mr. Zilm, the owner, furnished the information that work ceased in the quarry during the 1939-45 war. The road from Greenock to the entrance gate of Section 229 is not in good condition, and is formed from gravel and earth fill. The entrance gate is in the western fence of the section, about 300 yards from the southern boundary. A rough dirt track provides access from the road to the quarry.
