On February 9, 1954, Mr. J. W. Spooner of 25 Crewe Street, Henley Beach, reported an occurrence of uranium bearing ore along the Gorge Road, and submitted a sample for testing. A radiometric assay of this sample indicated a U3O8 content of 3.5%. The area was visited and examined by the Department's uranium geologist following a memorandum received from the Director on February 18. A specimen of strongly radioactive dark brown mineral taken from the same occurrence was submitted to the SADM petrologist for identification, and has been tentatively determined to be betafite (a pegmatite mineral of the pyrochlore group, that is essentially an oxide of columbium, titanium, and uranium, with small amounts of calcium, iron, rare earths such as cerium and niobium, and tantalum; typically having a U3O8 content of 20% to 27%.). The occurrence was deemed to be too scattered and discontinuous to be of economic significance.
