The Copper King orebody, located approximately 10 miles north-northeast of Beltana township, is a massive deposit of iron carbonate, the upper portion of which has been altered by oxidation and hydration to oxides of iron. The deposit was worked originally for its copper content, and subsequently as a source of ochre used for making pigments, besides, more recently, for purifying coal gas of entrained hydrogen sulphide. Following the conduct of a field survey and sampling of the deposit material, the author's consideration of the overall grade of iron-rich ore in relation to the limited size of the prospect has led him to the conclusion that the deposit has no economic importance as a source of iron for steel making. Its main potentialities are as a source of pigment ochres and for use in the treatment of coal gas. Approximately 90,000 tons of iron oxide ore containing 50% Fe2O3 are 'indicated' in the deposit for each 10 feet of depth that may be mined by open cut means. Further trenching, to test for extensions to this 100 yards square worked deposit and to explore other nearby small ochre exposures, has been recommended.
