Radioactive material from near the old Mt. Jagged Iron Mine was submitted by Mr H.J. Button, Adelaide Road, Myponga. Analysis of the sample indicated that the radioactivity was primarily due to minerals in the thorium series and that the uranium content was low. The Mt. Jagged Iron Mine was in operation intermittently from 1873-1916. The titaniferous hematite was smelted locally for a short time using a charcoal furnace, but the presence of approximately 5% titanium made smelting difficult. Later, ore was carted to Port Victor for shipment as flux. Total production from the mine was probably not more than 1,000 to 2,000 tons from a 60 ft. by 15 ft. open cut and several small pits.
