Magnesite or Magnesium Carbonate (MgCo3), is an industrial mineral which occurs in comparative abundance in certain mid northern areas of South Australia. Although the more important of these magnesite deposits have been exploited to some extent over a considerable number of years, production rate of magnesite has been low and spasmodic, averaging 800 tons per annum for the past 12 years. Production has been utilised for the manufacture of magnesium sulphate chiefly and to a lesser extent for local refractory requirements. It is, however, considered that the production potential of the known deposits is much greater than the existing rate of production, which could be readily expanded to meet new, or increased market demands for magnesite products. The purpose of this report is to draw attention to a likely field of future usages for magnesite in the building industry, in the form of magnesium oxy chloride cement, as a flooring material, interior finishing, tiling and other decrotive purposes. Under various names this material, compounded of calcined magnesite, magnesium chloride and a variety of fillers or aggregate has found wide application in the building industry overseas, Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, where raw materials are readily obtainable, comparitively cheap and the technique of manipulation is fully understood.
