In the stratigraphic sequence penetrated by Canopus Bore No. 1, five formations are present. From the surface to a depth of 185 feet, the boring passed through Recent surface sand and kunkar followed by medium to coarse sands of Plio-Pleistocene age. At 185 feet a series of Tertiary marine clays and marly limestones 351 feet thick, the uppermost member of which is of Miocene age and the lowest member Upper Eocene, were entered. Unconformities or disconformities are inferred at 185 feet, 350 feet, and 536 feet. At 536 feet there is an abrupt change, the boring passing into a fairly uniform formation of Eocene sands and sandy clays. The boring was terminated at 951 feet without the hole passing completely through these last-mentioned sediments. ?Precambrian bedrock is believed to lie not far below. No attempt has been made at this relatively early stage of investigation of the region to name the formations or correlate them in detail.
