Following an urgent verbal request from Treasury officials, the writer made a brief reconnaissance visit to an area immediately south west of Goolwa township in order to advise on the geology and foundation conditions of the area and its general suitability for the erection of industrial buildings. The area concerned is roughly rectangular, covers about 1½ square miles, and is bounded at the four corners by Sections 2333, 2205, 2209 and 2358 respectively, Hundred of Goolwa. Specific information sought was: • Composition of the substrata under the surface sand • Depth of the sand • Load bearing capacity of the various soil strata. The inspection necessarily brief, was carried out on 11 May 1954. A general inspection was gained of the geological features of the area, and some specific data on depth of strata was obtained by digging post holes at several localities.
