Free sulphur has been shown to be present in Nairne Pyrite Ore to the extent of 0.18%. The concentration of free sulphur in Flotation Concentrates was increased to 0.47-0.49%. From 89-94% of the Sulphur in the ore appeared in the concentrates. Depending on the fineness of the ground ore various proportions of the free sulphur could be removed by washing with water. Considerable variations were found in the sulphur content of various samples and it is postulated that sulphur is liberated by secondary reaction between sulphuric acid and pyrrhotite and the concentration is related to the age of the sample. Low temperatures oxidation of the floatation concentrates produced volatilised sulphur and sulphur dioxide. it is postulated that the latter results from reaction between ferric sulphate and sulphur in the presence of oxygen.
