For at least the past forty years the flint deposits occurring on the lower south east coast of South Australia have been worked to supply a comparatively limited Australian demand for flint pebbles as a grinding medium in the mining and paint industry, and as a raw material for the ceramic industry. Production rate has fluctuated widely, and during post war years has declined considerably due to the closing down of New Zealand gold mining companies, the principal consumers of grinding pebbles and mill linings. To investigate the possibility of establishing fresh avenues of commercial usage for this flint, which it is understood is comparable in quality to imported Danish flints, a visit of inspection was made by the writer, accompanied by the lessee to the principal flint deposits for the purpose of securing samples for laboratory examination and testing, and to form an assessment of the extent of the deposits.
