An occurrence of barite mineralisation located in the eastern valley wall of the River Torrens gorge, 16 miles east-northeast of Adelaide, which lies on freehold property and has been privately mined in the past, was inspected in order to gauge its potential for supplying small commercial quantities of second-grade mineral suitable for use in oil well drilling mud. A probable few thousand tons of such barite ore were estimated as being fairly easily accessible, but with any future mining resumption hinging on the client reaching a private agreement with the landowner, since the deposit is located in a region presently reserved from the operations of the Mining Act. Limited exposure of the barite-bearing veins and the nature of the local topography will necessitate performing underground exploration to confirm an inferred downhill extension of the previously mined lode.
