Following a request by the Council to the Corporation of the Town of Murray Bridge a survey was made by the writer on the 12th and 13th of October, 1954. Officers of the corporation gave information and guidance in the survey. The Corporation require material suitable for sub-base to base work and for the surface of open surface roads or the sub-surface of sealed roads. The Corporation has no facilities for crushing stone. At the present time the Corporation is co-operating with the District Council of Mobilong in using travertine from Section 158 in the Hd. of Burdett, Co. Russell. The Corporation requested that other deposits in the area be investigated and further reserves indicated. The most promising material was found on Section 114, Hd. of Mobilong. The only previous Mines Department report of a survey of road metal deposits in the area is by C. Wegener (D.M.533/52) in which the Monarto Granites are described. These lie some 5 miles west of Murray Bridge. Reserves of up to 280,000 cu. yards were estimated from the most favourable of four quarry sites. However, not only would there be the expense of quarrying the granite but also a crusher would be essential to produce road metal.
