Geological mapping of seven contiguous mineral claims at Golden Grove held by the SA Builders' and Contractors' Association revealed three areas of potential brick clay. A programme of test boring was carried out to define the deposits and obtain samples for ceramic firing tests. Fifteen holes were completed, totalling 929 feet of drilling, to penetrate a sequence consisting almost entirely of clays, decomposed shales and partly decomposed shales with a few narrow quartz stringers and minor hard bands. Tube sampling during drilling yielded 4 inch diameter cores of the shale, samples of which were crushed, mixed, pressed and fired at a range of temperatures from 800 to 1150 degrees Centigrade to obtain information about the material's workability and contraction behaviour on drying and firing. A brief estimate of the tonnage of available raw material is given based on subcrop contour mapping and density estimates derived from the drillhole data.
