Relocation by the Commonwealth Railways of part of the north south railway line has involved the by-passing of the township of Quorn, and the present hydrological survey has been undertaken in an endeavour to determine the possibility of developing the pastoral industry by increased planting of pastures under irrigation from groundwater sources. The whole of the area of the Willochra Basin has been covered, field work commencing in 1953 and being continued as circumstances permitted, till about the middle of 1954. Investigations included a barometric survey to establish surface contours, the drilling of three test bores to obtain information on the stratigraphy, and geophysical work to delineate the basin floor. Data were collected concerning all available bores and wells in the basin itself and the marginal bedrock areas, approximately 450 water samples being submitted for chemical analysis by departmental chemists. This information is shown in the attached tables. Cores from the first test bore have been examined petrologically, and sludge samples from the other two were submitted for paleontological examination to determine if possible the age and origin of the waterbearing sediments.
