As considerable difficulty is still being experienced by field geologists engaged on regional, hydrological, and stratigraphical surveys in assimilating the rapid advances which have been made by Australian Tertiary palaeontologists over the last few years, this general summary and correlation table have been prepared as a guide to the present interpretation of Tertiary stratigraphy in Victoria and South Australia. In preparing the table the writer has freely used unpublished work of A.N. Carter and 0.P. Singleton contributed to a Symposium on Tertiary Correlation held in Melbourne in August, 1954, and her own unpublished work on the Eucla and Murray Basins. This has involved inclusion of a number of manuscript formation names which must on no account be used in print until they have been defined and published by their authors in accordance with the Code of Stratigraphic Nomenclature.
