An aerial magnetometer survey carried out by the BMR in 1952, followed up by SADM during 1953 with detailed ground magnetometer surveys, revealed two prominent magnetic high anomalies located south of Balgowan on Yorke Peninsula (maximum recorded intensity 19,000+ gamma). Diamond drilling of two holes by the SADM to investigate the more southerly of these anomalies (in Section 153, Hundred Kilkerran) has now been completed. Drilling began in January 1955 and ended in May 1955, DDH 1 being drilled to an inclined depth of 505 feet and DDH 2 to an inclined depth of 441 ft 3 ins. Both holes, but especially No. 2, intersected wide strongly magnetic zones within the concealed bedrock which together can be said adequately to account for the anomaly. The country rock is granite and pegmatite, deeply altered in the magnetic zones. There are no surface outcrops, and there is a substantial cover of superficial material.
