Excavation for the pumping station at Mannum exposed a mid-Tertiary sequence of calcareous sandstones and clays with an abrupt change in sedimentation within the sequence. Three marine formations are recognized: the Mannum Formation, the Finniss Clays and the Morgan Limestone. The sequence is believed to straddle the Oligocene-Miocene boundary. It is unconformably overlain by late Tertiary or Quaternary non-marine sands.
