A single 70 degrees east-northeastwards inclined diamond drillhole, designed to test for the possible subsurface occurrence of uranium mineralisation at the historic Hillside copper mine, failed to encounter any when it was completed by SADM during June-August 1955. Due to difficult downhole drilling conditions, drilling was terminated at 262 feet 11 inches hole depth, before the objective was reached (an inferred extension of the lode ~50 feet below the deepest known underground workings). The information so obtained by just one borehole, from which only 32% of the core cut could be recovered, is inconclusive, but it suggests that copper mineralisation is weak or lacking in rocks present below the existing mine workings, and that uranium, which is associated with copper minerals in the mine dumps, is probably of negligible concentration where copper mineralisation is weak.
